Tánaiste condemns plan for hundreds of new Israeli settlement homes in West Bank

In the West Bank village of Iraq Burin, south of Nablus, a 16-year-old boy died in hospital after he was shot by Israeli troops as Palestinians pelted them with stones.

"There is a political decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and we will strive to reach an worldwide political decision to recognize a Palestinian state ... with (eastern) Jerusalem as its capital", Safadi said.

There were also clashes in the West Bank.

In December, the Israel Security Agency documented a near tripling of terrorist attacks against Israelis last month, reaching a two-year high of 249 incidents.

Israeli fire has killed 16 Palestinians since Trump's Jerusalem announcement. "Look no further to why there is no peace [sic]".

Around 2,000 Palestinians, enraged by US President Donald Trump's decision to move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, swarmed the streets of the West Bank and Gaza for the sixth consecutive Friday, burning tires and hurling projectiles at the Israel Defense Force (IDF) in 20 locations across the occupied Palestinian territories.

The move ended decades of Washington's neutrality on Jerusalem, a key issue in the Palestine-Israel conflict and caused global outrage at what analysts describe as a flagrant violation of Palestinian sovereignty and a blow to their right to statehood.

"The position of the European Union on Israeli settlement construction and related activities is clear and has not changed; any settlement activity is illegal under global law and undermines the viability of the two-state solution and the prospect of lasting peace, "said an EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs in a statement".

A further 200,000 live in East Jerusalem, annexed by Israel in a move never recognised by the global community.
