Sam's Club Closings 2018: 63 Stores Shutting Down

Walmart abruptly announced Thursday it would close dozens of Sam's Club locations nationwide and lay off thousands of employees.

Calls to the local stores, on State Road 70 in Manatee County, Cattlemen Road in Sarasota County and on Veterans Boulevard in Port Charlotte in Charlotte County were answered by staff who said those stores were not closing. Business Insider listed two Florida stores, one in Tampa and one in Fern Park just north of Orlando, as among those closing.

Walmart announced on Thursday it will soon be raising its workers' starting wage rate for hourly employees to $11 in the wake of the Republican-backed tax plan.

"After a thorough review, it became clear we had built clubs in some locations that impacted other clubs, and where population had not grown as anticipated", Furner said in the email.

The Baton Rouge location is the only reported closure in Louisiana, and the Siegen Lane Sam's Club will remain open, according to employees, who had a planned meeting about the move today.

Walmart will also pay a one-time cash bonus to eligible employees of up to $1,000.

There is a Walmart adjacent to the Worcester Sam's Club location.

But on the same day they announced the wage increase and bonuses, Walmart also announced that it would be closing about 50 Sam's Clubs stores.

Sam's Club shut down multiple locations on Thursday, and some employees and customers say they did so without warning. "Our focus today has been on those associates and their communities, and communicating with them". Sam's Club posted one such alert, referred to as a WARN notice, to the IN state government's website.

The large retailer also said it is expanding parental-leave and maternity benefits, as well as creating a new benefit to assist with adoption expenses. The one-time bonus of up to $1,000 is based on seniority and will amount to an additional $400 million.
