Google deleted 60 games from its Play Store after pornographic ads were found

This is an undated screenshot of childrens apps in the Google Play store

Dubbed "AdultSwine" the malware hides inside game apps that Google Play data says have been downloaded between 3 to 7 million times, Check Point said in blog posting on Friday.

Android smartphone users are regularly advised to download apps only from official sources such as Google Play to avoid malware, but security researchers have again found malicious apps in the store.

Reports, however, say this ability to make Duo calls to even those who aren't using the app is now restricted to Android users.

To scare users into installing unnecessary and harmful "security" apps, the malware displays a misleading ad claiming that a virus has infected the victim's device.

About 60 apps were recently deleted by Google after the company learned that a bug was placing pornographic ads inside the apps.

It said games and apps intended for children were a new target for cyber criminals that targeted hospitals, businesses and governments in the past. The option to call any of your contacts is included in the latest update, with an "Instant App" like experience called App Preview Messaging that's part of Google Play services. "All these are displayed to children while playing the game that the app is masquerading as", the security firm added. It might, for example, tell users they could win a "free iPhone" by answering a few questions before prompting them to enter a phone number.

"Although for now this malicious app seems to be a nasty nuisance, and most certainly damaging on both an emotional and financial level, it nevertheless also has a potentially much wider range of malicious activities that it can pursue, all relying on the same common concept", Check Point warned.

Games like Fit Nights Survival Craft, McQueen Car Racing Game and Addon Pixelmon for MCPE are believed to be the most popular apps affected by AdultSwine.
