Storm system brings snow ice to Florida

Snow began falling in the Florida Big Bend region on Wednesday and ended that night.

The forecast of a winter storm prompted officials to close schools, including Florida State University and Florida A&M University.

Bloomberg reports that parts of Florida, including its capital of Tallahassee, already experienced snowfall earlier on Wednesday.

Officials in Tallahassee have reported seeing white snowflakes falling in the panhandle of Florida. There was also a light glaze of ice forming on surfaces in downtown Tallahassee, according to the National Weather Service. The police in Tallahassee urged residents to use "extreme caution" on the roads and to bundle up if they were going to head outside in the snow and cold.

"It's just so nuts", Goldstein said.

It marks the first snowfall in 28 years in Tallahassee.

The National Weather Service said snow and freezing rain was expected to spread up the coast and warned that icy roads and low visibility could make driving treacherous. Dump trucks spread sand on major streets ahead of the storm and police closed several bridges, overpasses and a major causeway because of ice. Charleston, S.C. saw at least five inches of snow by Thursday morning.

Forecasters predict one to four inches of snow are in Georgia, while parts of eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia may see locally higher amounts that top 6 inches. As the storm moved north, parts of Georgia and the Carolinas could get some snow, as well.

Due to weather conditions, some airlines are allowing passengers to rebook flights without paying a cancellation fee -including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United Airlines as near-blizzard conditions are expected to blast through the eastern United States. Ten-year-old Ava Alarco enjoyed her day off of school.

This will result in extreme weather conditions, including freezing rain in SC; blizzard warnings with 50-70 miles per hour winds for multiple states, including Virginia and ME; and snow where snow hasn't fallen in decades, like Tallahassee.

In central Florida, the states largest theme parks announced that water attractions such as Disneys Typhoon Lagoon, Universal Orlandos Volcano Bay and SeaWorlds Aquatica were closed.
