The Iowa Department of Public Information released the information Friday morning. The review included people over the age of 65, McDowell said.

Parkland Hospital in Dallas has seen nearly 1,000 people coming to their emergency department seeking treatment.

Part of the reason people are concerned about this year's season is because of the type of virus that is circulating.

According to the TDH, people can be sick with the flu and transmit it up to 24 hours before they feel symptoms.

Much of this season's concern can be traced to Australia and other countries in the Southern Hemisphere, which struggled with a severe flu strain called H3N2.

Flu vaccines have been less effective in fighting H3N2 than other influenza flu viruses, making this particular strain more hard to contain.

"It appears this strain is particularly virulent and we are concerned about vulnerable populations being hospitalized", she said.

Since 2010, the CDC estimates there have been between 9.2 and 60.8 million flu cases each year.

Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, body aches, headaches and fatigue.

The flu has reached epidemic levels across the US, but early clues show the virus might be starting to wane.

People at higher risk are those with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, children under age two and people over 65. "This medication works best if started within two days of onset of symptoms".

If soap and water aren't available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Perkins advises those individuals to take special precautions.

State health officials say widespread flu cases are being reported in Alabama, but the illness hasn't reached the level of a pandemic. Flu season typically lasts up to 10 weeks.

Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) officials encourage all Mississippians to continue to make efforts to protect themselves and prevent the spread of the flu. Four came from a long-term care facilities in the county and another was reported at a middle school.
