Gambit Loses Director, Gets Release Date

13 January 2018, 02:30 | Myron Mathis

20th Century Fox’s Gambit movie has once again lost its director

Channing Tatum Gambit

Filming was reportedly due to begin in March ahead of a planned February 14th 2019 release date.

A Hollywood Reporter story claimed that Wyatt felt micro-managed by executives at Fox, and chose to depart the film rather than stick with something he didn't necessarily see eye-to-eye with them on.

Gambit is expected in theaters on June 7, 2019.

According to Deadline, director Gore Verbinski (A Cure for Wellness) has left the director's chair of Gambit due to "scheduling issues", and the site claims the split was amicable all around.

Also unclear is whether the move marks a change in direction for the film, perhaps prompted by Disney's impending acquisition of Fox. We're hoping that Tatum's enthusiasm for the film doesn't wane or else fans are never going to get to see this Gambit movie. It was good. But we were coming to it at a time at that creative phase of (the X-Men), where these movies went through a bit of a paradigm shift, where the X-Men movies and the superhero movies with "Logan" and "Deadpool" really broke down a lot of doors for us.

Verbinski's departure is only the latest in a long string of behind-the-scenes hurdles faced by "Gambit".

Verbinski is the third helmer to join, then subsequently leave, the film over the past few years, following both Rupert Wyatt (who bailed in 2015) and Doug Liman (who backed out in 2016).

Verbinski is just one of a number of directors who have come and gone on the project.

Gambit, as you know, is a long-gestating X-Men spin-off to be centered around - you guessed it - Gambit, the staff-carrying, card-throwing mutant with a sassy cajun accent.
