Future Samsung Phones Will Come with FM Radio

Future Samsung devices will come with an unlocked FM radio chip

Samsung’s future US smartphones will have active FM radio chips

Samsung is teaming up with the NextRadio app to enable FM radio on its future Galaxy smartphones.

Some smartphone users with an affinity for old-school technology may appreciate having access to FM radio, but TagStation president Paul Brenner also said in a press release that having access to FM radio frequencies could benefit people in emergency situations.

An unlocked chip and NextRadio's app allows you to listen to over-the-air FM broadcasts on your phone. Word has it that future Samsung smartphones will have a new feature: FM radio.

Samsung has joined LG, Alcatel and Motorola, who're all already part of the initiative (via Neowin).

Once enabled, FM radio will be available to Samsung users in the United States and Canada. Connecting to radio directly through the FM chip will use less data and less phone battery. Founded in 2013, TagStation, LLC is headquartered in Indianapolis, IN with offices in Indianapolis and Chicago, IL.

"Many smartphones in the world are manufactured with hardware capable of receiving free FM radio signals", a NextRadio blog post reads.

At the time, Apple claimed their newer phones didn't contain these chips to begin with and thus could not activate them upon request. If cellular coverage is unavailable or congested, the FM chip can provide important information from a local radio station.

NextRadio says that "upcoming [Samsung] smartphone models" sold in the United States and Canada will ship with their FM chip unlocked, though some reports suggest that a few Samsung devices already have this functionality. The company will start mass production of the world's first 512GB embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS), implying that the next-gen smartphones will be able to offer double the storage, of what it could previous year. APPLE has contended that there is no such tuner chip in recent editions of the iPHONE, a contention challenged by radio interests supporting the chip's deployment.
