American Red Cross asking for donations amid blood shortage

"We've had a lot of information out there about the need for blood, but it doesn't go away in a couple of weeks, the need always continues throughout the year", said Coron.

This is in addition to seasonal illnesses, such as the flu, and hectic holiday schedules collectively contributing to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what was needed in November and December.

The American Red Cross is searching for volunteers to help during events in the New Jersey region.

"It's been lighter than anticipated".

"It's not a critical appeal, but we are in need of those blood types", Scott said.

In September, 90 pints of blood were collected over the four days of the blood drive, during which the Sonora City Fire Department beat out the Sonora Police Department.

"That's not including blood drives that have had lower turnouts and have under-performed due to weather", Edsall said. "We're in a critical need". High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. We are hoping to get donors in, especially 0 negative because that's the universal donor.

Eligible donors with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a Power Red donation, where available.

The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 donations every day for patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. Because of a heating issue, the most recent Red Cross collection sites temporarily have been moved. The U.P. Regional Blood Center is one of the many places asking for donations.
