With Pres. Donald Trump's abrupt shut down Wednesday of his Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, it's time to focus on more serious issues involving this nation's election system.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday that Trump had chose to disband the commission "rather than engage in endless legal battles at taxpayer expense".

"The [White House] commission requested states' public voter roll data".

The panel was headed by Vice President Mike Pence, along with Kris Kobach, who as Kansas Secretary of State runs elections in that state and who has long urged new voting restrictions.

The president also directed the Department of Homeland Security "to review its findings and determine next courses of action".

Whatever Bannon's role might have been in advocating for the commission, its work continued after he left the White House, and its mission appeared to be lending credence to the president's dubious claims about the size of his election victory.

Kobach, the vice chairman of the commission, said the investigation will move forward without the procedural requirements governing federal advisory committees. He claimed more than 3 million people voted illegally.

"Many mostly Democrat States refused to hand over data from the 2016 Election to the Commission On Voter Fraud", Trump tweeted Wednesday.

When Trump tweeted Thursday morning about the need to push hard for voter identification, Grimes responded by calling Trump "either delusional or intentionally lying about voter fraud".

He said there were scattered problems across the state on Election Day, but given that millions of people went to the polls that day, "people make mistakes. that's not fraud".

The Trump administration had faced opposition or limited cooperation from most states, when the commission controversially requested voter information, such as Social Security numbers and addresses.

The issue of voter fraud has been a topic often used by Republicans during each election cycle despite the overwhelming amount of evidence showing that it isn't a widespread issue.

Booker, who called such voter fraud allegations "a blatant lie", introduced legislation in July to revoke the president's executive order.

Although the commission has previously requested states to hand over information on its voters, several like California and NY refused to comply.

"This commission was a sham from the start and everyone recognized it", Dale Ho, the director of the ACLU's Voting Rights Project, said in a statement.

According to a 2017 report on voter fraud by the Virginia Voters Alliance in Virginia, 5,556 non-citizens illegally registered to vote and cast 7,474 votes.
