Samsung targets autonomous driving market with new products at CES 2018

Samsung wants the world to know they manufacture more than phones and televisions. It's called the MoodRoof, and it's actually part of the bigger Moodscape entertainment setup. Samsung notes that the Intelligent Digital Cockpit is created to merge the car's instrument cluster and entertainment systems into one, unifying the dashboard, automotive system controls, climate controls, media, and more within a single panel - all benefitting from Harman audio solutions, Samsung's Bixby assistant, and the cloud. Three dial controls also feature embedded OLEDs and below them sits a curved OLED screen for the typical controls you would normally see there. Samsung says that customization also helps to future-proof the platform. That's what we heard from dozens of companies at CES 2018, including Samsung Electronics (SSNLF), which is vying for a significant chunk of what some estimate will be a $7 trillion market by 2050. What does DRVLINE offer? In addition, bringing together HARMAN's iconic audio brands and capabilities paired with Samsung's leading display technologies will deliver enhanced audio and video experiences to consumers and professional end markets.

"In a vehicle, the human brain is constantly performing incredibly complex calculations while driving", said John Absmeier, SVP of Autonomous/ADAS Strategic Business Unit at HARMAN and VP of Smart Machines for Samsung Electronics. This technology is incorporated into the DRVLINE platform. The industry has made incredible advances in automation, yet in-car compute is still a long way from approximating the power of our brains.

The Harman Digital cockpit platform is capable of spanning the entire width of a car's dashboard, based on the prototype unit displayed at CES.

It also pairs with Samsung's Android operating system, allowing smartphone users to have all their subscription services, such as Spotify and Audible, seamlessly integrated into the car's infotainment system.

Samsung and Harman also announced two new technologies: Drvline and an automotive solution ready for the fifth-generation network.

When Samsung acquired HARMAN International for 8 billion in March past year, little did we foresee announcements coming from the coalition this early.
