Moderate Democrats Get a Boost as Doug Jones Joins the Senate
WASHINGTON-Democrat Doug Jones will be sworn in Wednesday as Alabama's newest senator, bolstering his party's moderate wing and raising the prospect of growing philosophical divides among Senate Democrats.
Will Jones toe a conservative line, and even side with President Donald Trump at times? "On issues ranging from healthcare to job creation to tax reform, I am confident that Senator Jones will put the people of Alabama first".
He'll return to the Senate chamber on Wednesday alongside the newly elected senator from Alabama. Smith, who was Minnesota's lieutenant governor, was appointed to fill the seat of Democratic Sen.
Vice President Mike Pence administered the oath of office to Doug Jones from Alabama and Tina Smith from Minnesota.
[S] iding with congressional Democrats, Jones made clear he wants to help devise safeguards for immigrants brought to the country illegally as children, but without funding for a border wall.
Mr. Jones says he is optimistic that both parties can solve the thorniest of issues, including health care and how to handle "Dreamers" who were brought to the USA illegally as children.
Franken announced his resignation in December amid mounting pressure to step down in light of growing allegations of sexual misconduct against women before and after he joined the Senate.
A handful of other moderate Democrats from red states - like Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Claire McCaskill of Missouri - could be likely allies of Jones.
Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who runs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said that Jones should "do the right thing and truly represent Alabama by choosing to vote with the Senate Republican Majority". Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore in a special election to take the seat once held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Both Strange and Franken served on the panel, meaning that if Jones and Smith simply replaced them, committee membership would be tied.
"I think there's a lot of reason for optimism about Doug Jones' career in the Senate". But he followed up that stint with a position in the Obama administration, and will become the only African-American chief of staff in the Senate - which is appropriate given the central nature of African-American turnout and support levels to Jones's win.
