National Basketball Association wrap: Pre-KD Warriors shine in win over Rockets

Stephen Curry is well aware that Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has crafted his team specifically to try to beat the Golden State Warriors.

Houston is coming off of a 116-98 road win in Orlando, and the Warriors are fresh off of a 125-122 victory over the Mavericks in which Steph Curry nailed a three-point dagger to give the 'Dubs the win.

But what this game might've lacked in star power, it made up for in star turns, as journeyman Gerald Green - who was signed December 28 - and usual sixth man Eric Gordon went shot-for-shot with Golden State's three remaining All-Stars before the Warriors pulled away late. Paul was greatly aided by Eric Gordon (30 points) and Gerald Green (29 points) who shot a combined 21-of-40 from the field.

All in all, Green is averaging 16.8 points per game with the Rockets, hitting 56.8 percent of his shots beyond the arc. In the first, James Harden scored a game-high 27 points and the Rockets, who were 9-point underdogs, defeated the Warriors 122-121. I think if the Rockets want to win they are going to need a change in philosophy and are going to have to buckle down and win with the defense, not offense. They have so much offensive firepower it's disgusting and with Durant seemingly learning how to play defense overnight the Warriors are as scary as ever. The Warriors have gone 4-1 in the first five games without him. If they make it, a charity gets $5,000.

Rockets: The game was only the third missed by Harden in the last four seasons. With small forward Luc Mbah a Moute nearing a return from a shoulder injury, Houston looks poised to withstand the loss of Harden at least for the short term. "I didn't want to mess with that, that's his moneymaker".

"I just think we kind of ran out of gas", Gordon said. "We got enough inspiration and motivation to get back out there because of how good it feels". The Clippers, falling to 3 games below.500, were led by Lou Williams (still not traded, as you can see) and DeAndre Jordan with 26 points each, while Blake Griffin added 24.
