Hands On With the Vivo Phone's In-Display Fingerprint Scanner
12 January 2018, 07:37 | Justin Tyler
But as the competition became intense, Synaptics started to actively develop in-display fingerprint sensing technology, says TrendForce.
During the time we got to spend trying out the phone in Las Vegas, the on-display optical sensor, which is snugly fitted between the printed circuit board and OLED panel, only failed the device unlocking process a couple of times.
However, maybe you prefer fingerprint sensor over even a state-of-the-art face unlocking like Face ID, and you definitely want it in the front because you need to unlock the phone a billion times a day while it's laying on the desk, and you still want a huge display that takes up almost all the room from the front face of the phone.
Like many other smartphones, the fingerprint scanner is always waiting to detect a fingerprint when screen is off.
Its competitor Goodix, for instance, recently sent sample products to major mobile phone vendors for testing; Qualcomm cooperated with Vivo in developing ultrasonic fingerprint sensing in 2017; FPC, the Swedish biometric authentication solutions provider, released its ultrasonic fingerprint sensing technology at the end of 2017. The near-final design uses an optical signal so the sensor can see right through the display.
According to TrendForce, phone-makers recognised there is insufficient space on the front side of the smartphone for a standard capacitive fingerprint sensor, and put their focus on in-display fingerprint sensors in recent years. That if true will no doubt make for an exciting proposition. Once the fingerprint is registered, unlocking the phone works just fine, like any other physical fingerprint sensors.
Vivo has emerged the first company in the world to come up with a production ready smartphone that features an under-screen fingerprint reader.
Until Vivo officially launched the technology, device manufacturers had to find various alternative methods in order to achieve a bezel-less display on the phone. It also enables quick and secured authentication.
In-display fingerprint scanner was long awaited by smartphone fraternities since the advent of bezel-less displays.
The Chinese firm had announced previous year that they had developed the "in-display fingerprint scanning" technology for a prototype phone in China. The availability of Vivo's first in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone will be announced in early 2018.
