Heavy Snow And High Winds Pound The East Coast

East coast braces for 'Bomb Cyclone'

Public works crews worked to clear snow-covered roads with snow plows and trucks loaded with road salt in the Northeast and Southeast.

Part of US-13 at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia was closed because of high winds early on Thursday while state transportation departments throughout the region reported dozens of delays due to deteriorating road conditions.

Blizzard warnings were in effect along the east coast from North Carolina to Maine.

"With this forecast in mind, all Virginians should take the necessary precautions now to ensure they are prepared for the travel disruptions, power outages and other threats to health and safety that could arise during this significant weather event", McAuliffe said.

Dominion Energy reported more than 35,000 customers in southeastern Virginia without power Thursday morning.

On Thursday, Philadelphia can expect 3 to 6 inches of snow, while 4 to 8 inches are forecast for New York City and over a foot of snow is expected in Boston. Officials feared fast-dropping temperatures after the storm passed would turn remaining snow on roadways to ice.

The storm was powered by a rapid plunge in barometric pressure that some weather forecasters called a bombogenesis, or a "bomb cyclone".

"The pressure has dropped tremendously, 21 millibars in six hours, so it is really going to town off the Mid-Atlantic coast now", Oravec said. Additionally, Amtrak said it would operate a modified schedule between NY and Boston.

Delta Cargo said that it was, "working to prepare for winter weather that is expected to affect the East Coast".

While the term "bomb cyclone" comes off as very dramatic, NOAA says it's actually less scary than it sounds.

As of 10 a.m., 3,168 flights around the US were canceled, with airports in New York, New Jersey and Boston hardest hit, according to FlightAware, a Houston-based airline tracking service.

Passenger train operator Amtrak said it reduced service on several routes in the Northeast on Friday, including its train between Washington D.C. and Boston.

"It can be very unsafe", said Dan Pydynowski, a meteorologist with private forecasting service AccuWeather.

Florida's capital Tallahassee received its first snow in almost three decades on Wednesday, and parts of Georgia and SC received their heaviest falls since the 1980s.

In New Jersey, Orlando Igmat's vehicle got stuck in a snowbank along the Garden State Parkway in Tinton Falls as he drove to work at Verizon.

Millions in these regions will bundle up against temperatures in the single digits and teens during the day and near or below zero at night.

Governors of states in the path of the storm have declared emergencies. Luckily, she didn't see wind damage in the morning, but feared she and her husband could be homebound for days by snow. It brought high winds and swift, heavy snowfall. Most of the snow from Thursday's storm fell in the southern part of the state, with Cape May Court House receiving 17 inches.
