Former top five pick gets horrible news for the rest of his season

Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters has missed 9-straight games with his injured left ankle.

A clause in Waiters' contract could sway his decision to undergo season-ending surgery rather than wait until the offseason.

Waiters' ankle has been problematic since last spring, when it forced him to miss the final 13 games of the 2017 season.

The fifth-year guard out of Syracuse was averaging 14.3 points, 3.8 assists and 2.6 rebounds on the season but was shooting a shade under 40% from the field.

Waiters, who hasn't played since December 22, said last month he was aiming to delay surgery until the offseason after forgoing the option to have a procedure over the summer. Waiters' expected absence for the rest of the season is a major blow for Miami's depth.

Prior to this decision, Waiters had been resting and rehabilitating the ankle, but it was unclear if he had been making significant progress.

Last July, Waiters signed a four year, $52 Million deal with the Heat. But it's still a tough blow for the squad, which now sits at 24-17 and in fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
