CES: Behind Smart Gadgets, Amazon and Google Are Waging War

The platforms could help speed the development of new digital assistants, touch displays, video cameras and immersive media, Qualcomm said, noting that Harman and Lenovo were working with Qualcomm on new products, including the Lenovo Smart Display, which uses the Qualcomm Home Hub platform.

LG is not entirely straightforward about the technical specifications of the WK9 either, merely listing on the Korean company's official USA website support for proprietary ThinQ Artificial Intelligence capabilities, "premium class sound" tuned by Meridian Audio, the 8-inch size of the product's touch screen display, and both built-in Google Assistant and Chromecast functionality. Intelligent speakers, like Amazon's Echo and Google's Home, are "quickly becoming the core foundation of smart homes", he said.

The idea is for Google to remain competitive with Amazon's Alexa. "Our vision for Alexa is that she should be everywhere a customer might need her - at home, in the office, on phones - and in cars".

It is also apparently concerned device makers looking to make money off of voice interactions will turn to Amazon. At the same time, Amazon offered a set of tools created to help other companies build Alexa into their own devices.

Google is anxious that Alexa could threaten Google Assistant in overall market share.

One of the more eagerly covered gadgets of CES this year is a set of $1,000 (£740) smart glasses made by Vuzix.

Google Assistant soon will be coming to more than a dozen voice-activated speakers, including Altec Lansing, Anker Innovations, Bang & Olufsen, Braven, iHome, JBL, Jensen, JB, Klipsch, Knit Audio, Memorex, Riva Audio and SoLIS, Huffman said.

The tie-up marks the latest step in Amazon's onward march to attain global domination via the device by integrating it within all aspects of consumers' lives, with the assistant first emerging on select Toyota and Lexus models this prior to a wider fleet roll out in 2019.

"We have over one million actions available to users that [they] can now look up", a Google spokesman told the BBC.

Both companies see the competition in existential terms.

This push could include a revamp of Google's online store, selling Alphabet products with Google Assistant front and center.

Finding products are important.
