Camila Cabello Opens Up About Fifth Harmony's Controversial VMA Performance

Camila Cabello The Tonight Show

But the recent critical and commercial stumbles of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and others have resulted in a fresh-faced changing of the guard on the charts, led by Halsey, SZA, Cardi B and now, Camila Cabello, whose sizzling smash Havana featuring Young Thug climbed to a No. 2 high on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. I mean, sure, her exit from the group was rough, but DANG. And the girl who the shade was allegedly aimed at definitely agrees that it had less-than positive motives.

Tension started after Cabello's 2015 collaboration with Shawn Mendes on "I Know What You Did Last Summer" the singer told The New York Times in a lengthy interview conducted in Miami.

"I'd just say congratulations", the British rock icon shared of what he would say to Camila if they ever met.

The "Tiny Dancer" hitmaker heaped praise on the 20-year-old beauty, calling her "gorgeous" and complimenting her "great attitude".

"I have to make space for the good stuff to happen in my life", she continued. "I don't like holding onto the past, especially when it's stuff that, in my opinion, is just petty".

The incident, which was a clear jab at their now-departed member, quickly resulted in a frenzy of tweets and reactions last August, and was one of the most-talked-about moments of the night. "Anything I can do to help you I'll do", regarding Camila.

A year after the drama with Fifth Harmony, Cabello is in a much better place. Her 2017 single, "Havana", hit No. 2 on the Billboard charts, and her debut album, Camila, drops on January 12.

She explained: "I think that the good thing about social media and the internet is that I feel like it makes the world smaller and it just kind of breaks down barriers between languages, between people, between cultures, and I think that might have something to do with that. But I just wasn't expecting for them to be there and I just got kind of weird, I was like, 'Why are you so weird, stop being weird'".
