Sharper Edge: Ford Announces 2019 Ford Edge ST
11 January 2018, 06:13 | Jodi Jackson
2019 Ford Edge ST – the first Ford Performance SUV
Those beefed up brakes could come in handy when the ST is dialled up into its new Sport mode, which offers more immediate throttle response. By comparison, the most powerful version of the Edge now makes just 315 hp and the standard-issue model is rated 245 hp.
The Edge Sport has been rebadged as the Edge ST for 2019, with the 2.7-litre turbo V6 now making 335 hp in US spec (up 20 hp) and 515 Nm of torque.
Among the companies that are mass-market, Toyota fitted the brakes in 56% of its fleet for 2017, in comparison to only 30% at Honda Motor, 20% at General Motors and not even 10% by Ford Motor. (373 Nm) of torque, mated to the 8-speed automatic with stop/start. Sport mode will also allow for sharper engine braking and, perhaps most importantly, pushes out a more resonant exhaust note.
The 2019 crossover is by no means the first utility vehicle to get the performance treatment. Both hardware and software are tuned for maximum performance, with ST-tuned sport suspension and Pirelli P-Zeros hugging the corners while the optional performance brakes can handle the heat if the sport-tuned stability control system can't cope with driver aggression. "This thing is invigorating".
Not anymore, though, as now there's a 2019 Edge ST in town. The grille is taller, wider, and deeper than that on the outgoing crossover, although it doesn't look disproportionately huge thanks to the fact that there's now some separation between it and the headlamps. And there's more gloss black to the rear.
On the outside, the Edge ST features a unique front fascia that bears a striking resemblance to the ST-brand cars.
Revealed ahead of a public debut at this month's Detroit Motor Show, the titivated Edge isn't actually expected to arrive in the United Kingdom and Europe until 2019, but the reveal gives us a pretty clear idea of what Ford will be offering in the UK's Edge facelift then. The standard 2.0-liter EcoBoost underneath puts out five more horsepower, for 250 hp total (we're assuming that's on the same 93 octane the current Edge uses to get its 245 hp) and returns better, but undisclosed, gas mileage.
The crossover - which has a strong following among women who prefer it to traditional minivans - now gets a suite of standard-issue driver assistance technologies, such as forward collision warning.
The 2019 Edge is scheduled to go on sale in late summer and will make its public debut at the North American International Auto Show on January 14. The new model also gets the ability to make over-the-air, or OTA, software updates, much like today's smartphones.
Seahawks fire OC Darrell Bevell
Bevell has been calling the plays for the Seahawks offense all throughout Russell Wilson and Doug Baldwin's impressive careers. Head coach Pete Carroll tried to take the heat for the call, but much of the blame was still put on Bevell's shoulders.
