Microsoft and Qualcomm partner to boost Cortana adoption

Qualcomm Makes Smart Speaker Development Kit, Based on the Qualcomm Smart Audio Platform, Available Through Distribution

The world's largest smartphone chip company based in the US said its two Qualcomm Home Hub platforms support Google's Android Things.

Interestingly, the development kit offers a reference design for smart speaker devices.

Qualcomm announced that its Qualcomm Smart Audio Platform now supports Microsoft Cortana. Qualcomm will also showcase smart speakers at their CES booth with all major assistants in action. It is highly flexible to support OEMs who want to add their own differentiating features, and includes a unique combination of Amazon Alexa, Qualcomm® AllPlay™ Smart Audio Platform and Google technologies, as well as powerful Multicore ARM and Qualcomm® Hexagon DSP platform architecture.

You'll find more on Qualcomm's Smart Audio Platform right here. Qualcomm's Smart Audio platform supports Google Assistant and Google Cast for audio while the latest Qualcomm Home Hub platforms come with support for Microsoft Cortana.


According to Qualcomm, the new development kit will help developers and audio manufacturers to simplify the development of smart speaker products at various price points.

A senior executive from Qualcomm said that, taking the benefits of the capabilities and features of Cortana, manufacturers can deliver user experiences on a new platform. At the Consumer Electronics Show on Monday, Qualcomm also announced plans to make Cortana part of its Smart Audio platform.

While Microsoft hasn't confirmed any forthcoming products itself, it has released a new Cortana Devices SDK to make it easier for OEMs to develop and build new devices.

Chinese new energy company, BYD Company, announced the selection of Qualcomm Technologies' automotive solutions for upcoming electric vehicles from BYD.
