Google's Partners With Lenovo and Yi to Make VR180 Cameras

Google And YI Technologies Unveils YI Horizon VR 180 Camera

Google and Lenovo announced the Mirage Solo VR headset that requires no smartphone or tethering to operate.

2017 has seen some massive price cuts on virtual reality equipment, as both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift slashed their asking prices by hundreds of pounds in efforts to lure more customers into their ecosystems.

The idea of a standalone mobile VR headset is definitely a good one and should provide a better experience than using your smartphone.

"It's based on years of investment in simultaneous localization and mapping, and it enables PC-quality positional tracking on a mobile device without the need for any additional external sensors", he says. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 platform, the Mirage camera also features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a microSD card slot expandable to 128GB of storage. However, the Mirage Solo won't quite be able to match the experience of these headsets: The Mirage Solo comes with the same controller as Google's existing Daydream VR headset, which can't be tracked by the headset itself. You just mount this thing on your head, with "size accommodations for almost every face shape, visual aid and head proportion", and get transported into a whole new world of gaming and other hypnotic experiences.

VR180 cameras are meant to be simple and straightforward even for those who've never experienced virtual reality. The images captured in this way can be viewed with the Mirage Solo and other Daydream platform devices. It weighs 645 grams, and the LCD screen is simlar to a high-end smartphone display at 5.5 inches, supporting a 2560×1440 resolution. The first two units out of the gate are the Lenovo Mirage Camera and YI Horizon VR180 Camera. Lenovo has, fortunately, come to the rescue with the new Mirage Solo with Daydream standalone headset that promises freedom in more ways than one. There's also a 3.5mm headphone jack. Viewers can also easily view the content in 2D.

This just in, VR180 cameras soon to be replaced by your phone.

Much like the Mirage Solo, the Mirage Camera is also made of plastic. Of course you can turn around to fully take in 180-degree video shot on the Mirage camera, or 360-degree content produced elsewhere. Meanwhile, other companies like Z Cam and Panasonic are offering VR180 devices aimed at professionals. Part of that is due to the use of more advanced technology. Marketers will want to keep an eye on how popular VR experiences become and judge for themselves when it's time to jump into the new format.

Look out for bundles including the hardware, controllers, and games - if they drop below the £400 with games included, it's worth considering.
