Attempt to kill spider starts house fire in California

A resident of the building said that burning the spider may have been the cause of fire in the apartment.

Firefighters were called to a home in Northern California where someone had used a large torch lighter to fight back against a spider.

"It was a huge wolf spider", said Wisegarver, who is a caregiver for one of the men living in the apartment.

But Redding Fire Marshal Craig Wittner told BuzzFeed News that the spider attack is what tenants said they were doing.

It's unclear if the spider survived.

No one was injured and firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the second-story blaze, which reportedly caused $11,000 in damage and forced the occupants to temporarily find other housing.

Residents did attempt putting out the fire with a garden hose but were unsuccessful, AJC.com quotes fire officials.

The Redding Fire Department said the spider was covered in flames when it scurried to a nearby mattress, catching it on fire Sunday.

Everybody was able to get out safely but Redding Fire Battalion Chief Rob Pitt said the apartment is now uninhabitable.

Wisegarver said they had been thinking for some time they wanted to move out.

Wolf spiders can grow up to the size of a human hand, though many sub-species are much smaller.

Fire officials say they responded to 2534 Waldon Street in Redding around noon for a fire at a townhouse.
