"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", said Christy Peters, external communications manager of the local Red Cross Blood Services Region.

"Last week's massive winter storm had a significant impact on our blood supply with blood drives cancelled from SC to ME", said Chris Hrouda, president, Red Cross Blood Services.

Across the country, 150 blood drives were canceled and 5,500 donations were lost.

January is National Blood Donor Month, and Central Blood Bank is putting out a call to donors to help save lives during this time of extreme need.

Type O negative: The blood type that can be transfused to nearly everyone and is what doctors reach for in trauma situations. She says blood is a perishable product, and you can donate every 56 days.

"Thank you to those wonderful people from the Ipswich community who rolled up their sleeves and gave blood during the festive season, because your gift has helped to save lives", she said.
