Killed, National-Level Powerlifter Hurt In Road Accident

Two other players including a world champion who bagged the title for India in Moscow past year, were injured in the accident.

The six athletes were going from Delhi to Panipat in a Swift Dezire compact sedan, carrying their powerlifting kits, when they met with the accident at 4 am near Alipur village, close to the Singhu border between Delhi and Haryana.

"The impact of crash was so severe that the vehicle rolled over several times with its roof getting completely blown off, before hitting a pole and killing four of them on the spot".

He had sustained grievous head injuries and severe internal bleeding.

The official said that the driver was speeding despite dense fog in the area.


Police say that the deceased have been identified as Harish, Tinku and Suraj while the fourth person is yet to be identified.

The injured were identified as Saksham Yadav, a national-level powerlifter, and Rohit, he said.

They have been admitted to Max Hospital in north-west Delhi's Shalimar Bagh.

"He was taken to the emergency department where he was administered first-aid and stabilized. He apparently was later taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre", a hospital source said. The group had been celebrating one of their members' birthday when the incident took place.

It is being probed whether it is a case of drunken driving since there were some liquor bottles found in the vehicle, they said.
