NHL says Seattle can apply for franchise, start season-ticket drive

The NHL board of governors has agreed to allow Seattle to begin its preliminary motions to gauge if it is a viable location - starting with an application for expansion and then a season-ticket drive, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters in Florida.

Seattle's expansion fee has been set at US$650 million - which is $150 million more than the expansion fee Bill Foley paid for the Vegas Golden Knights, an expansion team that started playing this season.

What Bettman is asking of Seattle isn't all that different of the Vegas Golden Knights, who are now in their inaugural season and are in second place in the Pacific Division. He made the announcement Thursday after the first day of the board of governors meeting.

The ownership group includes David Bonderman who is a private equity CEO and Jerry Bruckheimer who is a Hollywood producer.

The news follows this weeks Seattle City Council vote to approve a Memorandum of Understanding between the city and the Oak View Group, which plans to renovate KeyArena, the former home of the NBA's SuperSonics in the city's Lower Queen Anne neighborhood.

The ticket drive would be to determine how much interest for a pro hockey team there is in Seattle.

The current closest National Hockey League team to Seattle is the Vancouver Canucks, a team that isn't even in the country.

The NHL was specific in pointing out that Seattle is likely an expansion team, not a relocation like some had speculated.

"Obviously, there a lot of differences between Seattle and Quebec City, not the least of which is our conference alignment", Bettman said.
