Russian Federation just declared the defeat of ISIS in eastern Syria

Russian Federation just declared the defeat of ISIS in eastern Syria

Senior military officer Sergei Rudskoi said at a briefing that Moscow's "goal to defeat armed groups of the ISIL terrorist organisation in Syria has been accomplished", using another acronym for the group.

Hours prior, the Chief of Russia's General Staff General Valery Gerasimov made a similar announcement to reporters, noting: "All (Islamic State group) units in Syria have been destroyed, and the territory has been liberated".

There has been an "unprecedented" involvement by Russia's airforce in recent days, he said, with warplanes making 100 sorties and staging up to 250 strikes daily. ISIL is an alternative abbreviation for the militant group.

But the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the conflict, said Thursday that IS still held about eight percent of the Deir Ezzor province.

"We need to. move, undoubtedly, on to the next stage - the start of a political process", he added.

The United States and France called on Russia Wednesday to deliver the delegation of President Bashar Assad to Syria peace talks in Geneva after discussions on ending the 6-year-old war resumed with no sign of the government attending.

Rudskoi said the IS defeat had paved the way for Russia to reduce its military presence in Syria: "With the liquidation of armed bands of the ISIL terrorist group in Syria, the Russian contingent will concentrate its main efforts on providing aid to the Syrian people in rebuilding peace". Those strikes have helped Assad regain control over much of war-ravaged Syria. Over the past week, Syrian government forces supported by Russian air power had completely liberated the area northwest of the city of Abu Kamal, covering a total area of roughly 2,500 square km.

In comments released by the Kremlin, Putin said that military operations against the Islamists had ground to a halt on both sides of the Euphrates while Russian activities would focus on backing a political process that would eventually involve presidential and parliamentary elections.

The Syrian conflict began in 2011 and over 340,000 people have been killed.
