PM flays parties for seeking votes in Ambedkar's name

BR Ambedkar 61st death anniversary Ram Nath Kovind Narendra Modi pay tributes to Baba Saheb

The Congress vice president has visited over a dozen temples in the poll-bound state even as the critics accused the party of playing "soft Hindutva" card.

Hitting out at the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that parties that sought votes in the name of Dr B R Ambedkar "tried to erase his contribution in nation-building and did little to build the Ambedkar International Centre conceived 23 years ago".

According to an official release, the Dr Ambedkar International Centre is a fusion of Buddhist and present day architecture which includes seminar as well as conference halls. "It will not be wrong if I say that more people today are influenced by Babasaeb than by the family for whose sake such things were done".

He said the Congress had planned the centre in 1992 but it was only now during the BJP's tenure that work was completed. It is a different matter that they are thinking more of Baba Bhole than Babasaheb. Modi was alluding to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's recent temple visits and claims of being a Shiva devotee.

Two-phase elections for the state's 182 assembly seats will be held on December 9 and 14.

He also said that his government is making all efforts to develop places related to Baba Saheb Ambedkar's life as pilgrimage sites. Mr Modi said it will provide information to people especially youth about Babasaheb. The home state of the Prime Minister has been witness to massive protests by Dalits against the BJP since a year ago when two Dalit men were mercilessly flogged in Gujarat's Una by cow vigilantes on the suspicion that they had slaughtered cows.

"We had said that in one year we will build toilets for girls in all government schools, we have already constructed over 4 lakh such facilities".
