Baker Mayfield claims Davey O'Brien Award

Baker Mayfield wins Walter Camp Football Player of the Year Award

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is the victor of the 2017 Davey O'Brien Award, given out on Thursday at the College Football Awards Show at the College Football Hall of Fame. The Heisman Trophy victor will be named Saturday night, with Mayfield, Love and Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson the three finalists. As for the Maxwell Award, which is given to the player of the year in college football, Mayfield beat out a pair of running backs in Penn State's Saquon Barkley and Stanford's Bryce Love.

Mayfield is a former walk-on who has led the No. 2 Sooners to the College Football Playoff, where they will play No. 3 Georgia in the Rose Bowl on January 1.

Mayfield, Love and Jackson are also the finalists for the Heisman, which will be handed out Saturday night in NY. Jason White won it in 2003 and '04. I have to give a lot of the credit to my teammates and coaches, they are the reason that I am in position to win this award and I could not have done it without them.

He joins Steve Owens, Billy Sims and Josh Heupel as Sooners to win the award. "I am so appreciative of Mr. Hornung and the Louisville Sports Commission for selecting me for this very special honor".

The Big 12 enjoyed a solid awards night, as Oklahoma State's James Washington won the Biletnikoff Award that is given to the nation's top wide receiver and Texas' Michael Dickson won the Ray Guy Award (nation's top punter). With the Sooners, he has become a three-year starter and one of the most productive passers in college football history. He's also rushed for 310 yards and five touchdowns.

He may have been snubbed in the eyes of some when it came to the Heisman Trophy voting, but Saquon Barkley will still be taking home at least one piece of national hardware this awards season. Those three awards were presented to him Thursday night at ESPN's college football awards show in Atlanta.
