Louis Oosthuizen has withdrawn from the Joburg Open after an accident at the airport

Louis Oosthuizen withdraws from the Joburg Open

After a day of excellent scoring at the Randpark Golf Club, it was 28-year-old Keenan Davidse's name at the top of the jam-packed Joburg Open leaderboard after the first round on Thursday.

She hung a broom on a tree outside the clubhouse and buried a fork at the base of the trunk while a colleague placed a glass of water upside down on a saucer above the fork.

The tournament at Randpark Golf Club starting on Thursday, was set to feature SA's top-ranked player, at 23rd in the world, but a freak incident left Oosthuizen with no choice but to withdraw.

A field of 240 players is split over the Bushwillows and Firethorn courses for the first two days. "I'm obviously very happy and pleased", he said.

The last Joburg Open, staged at a different venue in the largest South African city, was cut from four rounds to three because of torrential seasonal rain.

"When I played the Sunshine Tour event at Simola my little boy was sick with a bad chest".

The two-time European Tour victor kept a bogey off his card and made three straight birdies on the front nine before picking up four shots in six holes after the turn to vault into the share of second place.

He is joined by James Morrison, Sebastian Heisele and South African trio Jared Harvey, Erik Van Rooyen and Ockie Strydom.

Davidse excelled at the par fives, claiming birdies at all three, Another five birdies came at par fours with one at a par three.

The 2010 Open champion was looking to build on a closing 67 which saw him finish in a share of seventh at last week's Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open but somehow managed to get his finger jammed in a luggage trolley at the airport on Monday.
