Lilac fire in San Diego County destroys 2 buildings, burns 350 acres

San Diego County was quick to proclaim a state of local emergency due to the fire. Cal Fire officials said 20 structures were destroyed and several remain threatened as the fire grows at a unsafe rate of speed.

Firefighters were dealing mainly with the Thomas Fire, the largest of the four, which started on Monday at 50 acres and swelled to 96,000 acres as of 10 a.m. Thursday. "These Santa Ana winds this time of year, they get into the brush and fires start nearly instantly".

A wildfire broke out in north San Diego County Thursday and by mid-afternoon flames had burned five structures and more than 500 acres, and threatened 1,000 homes near Bonsall.

Keith Brackpool, the chairman of Santa Anita which owns San Luis Rey Downs, said stable personnel had no choice but to let horses loose to get them away from the barns.

The evacuations include a mobile home park, a golf course country club and two schools.

Various reports indicated that the fire crossed some of the main roads around the training center.

A post on O'Neill's Facebook page indicated that O'Neill's assistant Leandro Mora was on site at San Luis Rey to assist with the evacuation process. "We turned a lot loose on the infield of the training track in hope".

There are now 6 major wildfires burning in Southern California. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all".

Del Mar has housed horses in the past when fire conditions existed in the region, including in the fall of 2007 when similar conditions prompted a variety of farms in the area to evacuate horses to the racetrack.

At the time of publication, there were no confirmed fatalities, but San Diego's ABC News 10 reported that a worker was injured in his attempts to rescue a horse.
