Delta Flight Forced to Make Extra Stop For Bathroom Break

A Delta Airlines jetliner departs from Mc Carran International Airport in Las Vegas on Wednesday

It's an uncomfortable, all-too-familiar predicament: You have to use the toilet but there isn't one in sight.

A Seattle-bound Delta Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing hundreds of kilometres away from its charted route, in Billings, Montana last week.

According to the Billings Gazette, a Delta incident report, Gazette, 'ceased functioning, with passengers queuing up and indicating they needed to visit the toilet'.

The flight diverted south to the Billings Logan International Airport and landed there just after 6 p.m., according to Flightaware.com.

The plane taxied to a cargo area due to a lack of available gates and a stairway was rolled out so passengers could "disembark to find relief of built-up pressures", the Delta report states.

Kevin Ploehn, the Billings director of aviation and transit, said ground crews escorted the passengers safely into the terminal where they could do their business and wait while the plane's toilets were serviced.

Cabin crew were unable to fix the problem and the smell became unbearable for passengers seated nearby, forcing the plane to turn around near Brussels and land at Heathrow Airport.

While passengers made their way to the restroom, the plane got refueled and prepared to make the final leg of the trip to Seattle in comfort.

"Delta apologizes for the inconvenience", the spokesman said.

Instead, they decided to make a sharp left turn and head hundreds of miles south to Billings Logan International Airport.

"I've heard of flights getting diverted. because toilets overflowed and that blue water was rolling down the aisle", Ploehn said.
