DC Films Shake-Up Coming After Justice League Failure

Deathstroke Joe Manganiello

After Justice League stumbled not only critically but, crucially, at the box office as well, Johns and Berg are reportedly out-and Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, et.al. are once again a group of heroes in search of a leader.

According to Variety, Berg will no longer act as the head of DC Films' production division. Pictures, will leave his post at the studio to become a producer with filmmaker Roy Lee, who has produced successful movies for the studio including "It" and "The Lego Movie". Jon Berg and Geoff Johns were tapped to co-run DC Films.

Does this indicate a positive turn of events in the DCEU, or are you anxious that Warner Bros. might dilute a brand that's already having an identity crisis by shifting it under a single WB production banner?

"This is something that Jon approached me about six months ago, and he expressed his goal was to ultimately be a producer at the studio", said Emmerich in a statement. Toby Emmerich, president of Warner Bros.

Naturally, hearing this from Hecker will only increase fans' desires for a Snyder cut, which could result in Warner Bros. putting out a new version of the film down the line. The film was mauled by critics despite a star-studded cast including Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman. However, the outlet notes that Johns' involvement with DC films "may evolve" moving forward, and "could be more advisory in nature". There are no plans for Snyder to return as a director within the DCEU. For comparison, Marvel conducts its movie division autonomously despite being owned by Disney, while Fox and Sony create their superhero flicks beneath the studio's overall banner.

One of the criticisms levied against Justice League was that the film felt incomplete, or that too much was obviously cut from the finished product after Joss Whedon took over the director's chair from Zack Snyder. So clearly, with the right people behind and in front of the camera, it's possible that Warner Bros. could give adult audiences something a little more visceral to chew on. The studio is "still developing a standalone Flash feature".
