Brush fire threatens homes in Bel Air area I-405 closed from 10 to 101
As firefighters continues to battle wildfires across Southern California, there is now another blaze, this latest one in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The 50-acre fire ignited sometime after 5 a.m. and resulted in the closure of lanes on Interstate 405, according to the Los Angeles Times. While art lovers anxious when they heard that Los Angeles'sGetty Center would be closing its doors this week, as the fires closed part of the 405 Freeway, there was a bit of good news.
A fast-moving brush fire that broke out early this morning in the Kagel Canyon area above Sylmar has charred about 4,000 acres, burning structures and forcing mandatory evacuations.
"We expect to be out here all week fighting and containing this fire", Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said.
Leo Baeck Temple, Stephen Wise Temple, American Jewish University's Familian Campus and the Skirball Cultural Centre all were closed due to the fire, the Los Angeles Jewish Journal reported.
"Winds have died down to allow fire department to get some control, but high winds/Santa Ana winds coming tonight", Freeman said via text message. As of 9:30 a.m., off-ramps along the northbound 405 Freeway are closed at the 10 Freeway to Mulholland Drive, and southbound 405 off-ramps are closed from Mulholland to Sunset Boulevard, a CHP spokesman said. The fire is not contained in the slightest.
Hartwig, who was on site on Wednesday along with about 100 essential staff members, said he was still concerned that heavy winds might blow across the highway toward the Getty.
Deputy Fire Chief Charles Butler said firefighters and aircraft stopped the growth of the 475-acre blaze in the Bel Air neighbourhood.
"Any area that has brush in the city of Los Angeles is threatened", Terrazas said.
The Getty Center was already set to be closed Wednesday due to the other wildfires burning in Southern California.
"We don't have a good feel on which direction this fire is heading", Stewart said.
State fire director Ken Pimlott said winds that eased in the afternoon could return with gusts up to 80mph on Thursday that would make it impossible to fight the fire. More than 50 public schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District were also shuttered.
