29 horses burn to death at ranch destroyed by Creek Fire

Firefighters are making some gains as they continue to douse the Creek Fire, which scorched thousands of acres in the Sunland-Tujunga and Sylmar areas.

Three firefighters suffered what were considered to be minor injuries Tuesday. The other 10 homes were within Los Angeles city limits, according to Stewart. Padilla said she and her family were able to get out of her home just in time Tuesday morning but were not able to take their horses with them.

At around 6 a.m., sheriff's deputies and Los Angeles Police Department officers began evacuations in the 12300 block of Little Tujunga Road down to Foothill Boulevard, according to the LAPD.

Padilla's family owns more than 60 horses and said they will count how many of their equines survived the fire as soon as they are given the opportunity to do so.

"We realize what an inconvenience this is and how traumatic this is to so many people, but we've watched fires in Northern California, we've seen through experience it's much better to err on the side of safety", Garcetti said at a Wednesday afternoon news briefing. And the Los Angeles Unified School District said the student bodies of Hubbard and Harding schools in Sylmar would be redirected to San Fernando High School at 11133 O'Melveny Ave.in San Fernando.

With two large brush fires burning in Los Angeles and Ventura counties, air quality was visibly bad Tuesday, even with strong winds blowing much of the smoke out onto the ocean.

The Foothill (210) Freeway was closed in both directions between the Golden State (5) Freeway on the west and the Glendale (2) Freeway and aren't expected to be reopened until at least later this morning.

The gusty winds also have the potential to bring down trees and power lines, and already brought down several big rig trucks along the 210 Freeway in Fontana.
