UT Offers Head Coach Position To Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt

07 December 2017, 07:07 | Charlene Valdez

Tennessee and Jeremy Pruitt continue moving toward his hiring as head coach

Coaching Search Update: Pruitt meeting with Fulmer

Not long after reports surfaced that Tennessee had offered Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt the position, more reports came out that Pruitt had accepted the offer and was finalizing the deal.

Pruitt was Georgia's defensive coordinator in 2014-15 before returning to Alabama.

It was being reported that Tennessee coaches on the road recruiting had been called back to Knoxville with word that Pruitt's hiring would be officially announced Thursday. Under Pruitt Alabama gave up an average of 11.5 points a game this season and 11.8 points last season. That was his first job in major college football after spending the previous seven years as a high school assistant coach.

Pruitt replaced Georgia coach Kirby Smart as Alabama's defensive coordinator in 2016. Last year, Pruitt's defense led the nation in scoring defense, giving up just 13 points per game.

There was no early signing period at that time and the program Smart was inheriting from Mark Richt was on much more stable footings than what the next Vols' head coach will take over.

This would be at least the second meeting with Pruitt, according to GoVols247.

Keep in mind Pruitt had to replace Marlon Humphrey, Reuben Foster, Ryan Anderson, Jonathan Allen, Tim Williams and Eddie Jackson, all of whom were selected in the 2017 National Football League draft.

As good a defensive coordinator as Pruitt has been, he'll sink or swim as a head coach based on how he fills out the rest of his staff.

Currie fired former UT head coach Butch Jones 25 days ago, and nothing went right.

The school walked back a contract offer to Greg Schiano after Volunteers fans overwhelmingly criticized the move. He was immediately replaced by former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer.
