Both incidents involved the engines during climb on takeoff from Auckland, forcing them to turn back.

While the Dreamliner fleet was not grounded after the more serious Tuesday incident, Air NZ says both affected aircrafts were taken out of service immediately upon landing back in Auckland.

While New Zealand's national carrier did not disclose the cause of the issue, the New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission said it was investigating two events involving "engine abnormalities".

Earlier this week, another Air New Zealand flight, this time bound for Japan, was forced to return to Auckland after experiencing engine issues.

"At this stage our investigation team is satisfied all parties are doing the right thing to ensure the continuing safety of the travelling public".

The Trent 1000 engine has had a number of technical hitches, which the manufacturer has been working hard to resolve, with a wide range of operators in recent years. An Air Asia A330 returned to base after severe in-flight shaking in August.

Rolls-Royce did not have spare engines available while the maintenance work was being undertaken, Air New Zealand said in an announcement to the stock exchange.

Customers are encouraged to check this first before calling the airline's contact centre.

During peak months the airlines will jointly operate a total of 35 return services a week between Singapore and New Zealand, including Christchurch and Wellington flights.

"Rolls - which has more than 400 of the US$10m engines in service - has acknowledged the problems".

The company has said previously it expect to an improvement in earnings in the current financial year, compared with the 2016/17 result.

Air New Zealand chief operations integrity and standards officer David Morgan told the NZ Herald the the blades failed on the flight to Tokyo Narita, while exhaust gas temperature rises indicated problems with the engine.
