This year's YouTube Rewind video is quite the ride

Latino artists' popularity on YouTube is proof that they are massively popular in worldwide markets, even if they continue to face barriers to entry in mainstream music in the U.S. What's more, it points to the fact that Latino listeners have been shaping global pop music trends for some time (check pop's current obsession with dembow-lite riddims for proof).

Earlier this week, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki pointed to the gravity of the situation: since June, the company has taken down more than 150,000 videos depicting violent extremism. The show, called The Mask Singer, requires performers to wear elaborate masks to hide their identities.

Ireland's most watched videos of 2017 have been announced by YouTube. It's been produced in Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and China, but this particular video is from a Thailand show. Seven out of the 10 spots on YouTube's list come from Latino artists, including the inescapable "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber, which has also become the most-watched video on the platform of all time, dethroning Korean viral sensation Psy's "Gangnam Style" with over 4.4 billion plays.

The seventh annual YouTube Rewind is here.

Not surprising, however, is that the list is dominated by Irish music - claiming the top four spots. The entire list is men, even though women definitely produced some great music and quality videos to match.

- Lady Gaga's Super Bowl LI halftime performance.

As if it isn't hard enough to run a platform that serves up a billion hours of video per day across the globe, YouTube also has to contend with all sorts of problematic content uploaded to its site - from terrorist propaganda to disturbing material disguised as cartoons for children, the company has plenty to sift through.

- A hilarious, bad lip reading of Donald Trump's inauguration. It was produced by Beth David and Esteban Bravo at the Ringling College of Art and Design. Some of them are no-brainers, like Luis Fonsi's "Despacito," which was the undisputed song of the summer.
