Cupertino on Thursday unveiled the most popular apps, music, movies, TV Shows, books, and podcasts of 2017 across the App Store, Apple Music, iTunes, iBooks, and Apple Podcasts. Apple says its app of the year for iPhone is Calm, a meditation and sleep app, and Splitter Critters is 2017's iPhone game of the year.

Huawei has announced that it will launch a localised app store in Africa. In Canada, Affinity Photo has won the title of the iPad app of the year, whereas Old Man's Journey has surfaced as the iPad game of the year.

On Apple Music, Drake tops album of the year with "More Life", while Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" gets top song honors. Taylor's Swift album Reputation is already the number 3 best-selling album for 2017, despite debuting only a few weeks ago.

Apple also has new editorial this time around; "trends of the year". Four breakout trends for this year for iOS devices include the introduction of augmented reality (AR) apps and games, the rise of real-time competitive gaming, apps focused on mental health and mindfulness, and apps transforming storytelling and reading.

This year's most popular app in India, however, is topped by WhatsApp, followed by YouTube, Facebook, PayTm, and Facebook Messenger.

As in previous years, the company's App Store editors have selected the best apps and games of the year for every software platform - iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

Coming to the top TV shows, there are not many surprises with Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory, The Americans, and Rick and Morty leading the charts.

For movies, the top film was Moana followed by the Stars Was instalment Rogue One. Unsurprisingly, Super Mario Run leads Apple's list of United States best-selling mobile games after prevailing in Google's contest for the most downloaded new Android game of the year too.

You can see all the top charts and recommendations in the App Store and iTunes Store now.
