GETTY Lionel Messi wants to block a deal for Liverpool ace Philippe Coutinho

A poor performance at Russian Federation 2018 could see Messi vanish again, though, according to the man himself.

Lionel Messi has hinted that he may retire from worldwide football if he and his Argentina team-mates have an unsuccessful 2018 World Cup.

"I've said many times that my dream is to play at Newell's but I don't know what will happen, and a part of that doubt is due to the way the country is at the moment".

When it comes to modern day football, there's very little that brings out opinions quite as vociferously as a footballer signing a new contract, especially when details of the size of the deal are leaked.

Lionel Messi has demanded for Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain to be recalled by Super Eagles World Cup rivals Argentina for Russian Federation 2018 because he is "one of the best strikers in the world".

According to Marca, City also offered the 30-year-old a mouth-watering £850,000-a-week to reunite with former boss Pep Guardiola.

"We went through a tough spell".

I think that we have time to improve in these games and before the World Cup. when we'll have a month to put everything in order before the start. As we are today, we are not far from that although there are better teams than us such as Brazil, Germany, France and Spain.

Argentina endured a torrid qualifying campaign in South America's CONMEBOL group, only securing a World Cup place in the last match against Ecuador in October with a Messi-inspired 3-1 victory in Quito.
