Ryan Reynolds to Star in Pokemon Movie 'Detective Pikachu' (Exclusive)

Ryan Reynolds To Star In Pokemon Movie Detective Pikachu

That honor belongs instead to one Ryan Reynolds. The world is unusual, and I'm not sure I'm long for it anymore.

Detective Pikachu has finally tracked down the man who will provide his voice in the upcoming live-action Pokémon movie from Legendary Pictures.

I never thought I'd write the following.

Rob Letterman (Goosebumps) is directing Detective Pikachu, which is due to start filming mid-January in London, with the release date to-be-announced. I vote for the former.

As the title suggests, Detective Pikachu isn't just pulling any ol' Pokemon property, which have traditionally focused on trainers who collect the cuddly, but powerful creatures called Pokemon to compete in battle tournaments. Newton will reportedly play a journalist while Reynolds' Pikachu will offer his help along the way. Sources close to THR note that Reynolds' role will be "motion capture in nature", so don't expect to see the actor all done up in yellow face-paint and a lightning bolt-shaped tail.

After the hard-R Deadpool brought him to new heights of fame, Ryan Reynolds could do anything.

Reynolds will star alongside actors Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and The Get Down) and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies). The character of Detective Pikachu is comical because he is a gruff spin on what is typically a cute character who can only squeak his own name.
