Analysts said Saleh's death would be a huge morale boost for the Iran-aligned Houthis, since Saleh had switched sides by abandoning the Houthis in favor of a Saudi-led coalition. He was killed in an attack on his convoy on Monday.

The head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard says a plot against Yemen's Shiite rebels was "nipped in the bud", apparently referring to the killing of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Meanwhile, Doctors Without Borders said patients were evacuated from a hospital in the northern province of Hajja, which is under Houthi control, after it came under airstrikes on Sunday.

There was no immediate word on casualties.

The intervention by the exiled Ahmed Ali Saleh, if confirmed, could shift the balance of power yet again.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahayan, the de facto leader of the UAE, visited Ahmed Ali at his residence to offer his condolences, according to Sheikh Mohammed's Twitter account.

Heavy airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition rocked Yemen's capital on Tuesday, striking Sanaa's densely populated neighbourhoods in apparent retaliation for the killing of Saleh.

Many Sanaa residents were staying indoors on Wednesday out of fear of a Houthi crackdown.

Mohamed Ali al-Houthi, a rebel leader, said Tuesday that "some sons" of Saleh have been hospitalized, without providing further details.

"There's a scary calm in the city", said Ali, a 47-year-old businessman who declined to use his full name.

Mattis said he did not believe the US military would play a role in easing the humanitarian situation.

The Arabian peninsula's poorest country, Yemen is one of the most violent fronts in a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, who have also backed opposing sides in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere across the Middle East.

But over the past year, the Houthis appear to have undermined Saleh, wooing away some of his commanders. Top Houthi officials called it high treason backed by their Saudi enemies.

Saudi Arabia and its allies receive logistical and intelligence help from the United States. Several had been killed in the raids.

Former Yemeni President Ali Saleh, who was killed by the Houthi rebels, was buried on Wednesday without great solemnities, media reported.

The Houthi-controlled interior ministry distributed a video of dozens of seated barefoot men it said were pro-Saleh fighters detained in one of its party headquarters. United Nations and Red Cross aid flights had landed at the airport, the United Nations in Yemen said.

"Increased hostilities will further threaten civilian lives and exacerbate their suffering", he said in a briefing to the Security Council on Tuesday.

Bessho said the 15-member council was deeply concerned about the sharp escalation in violence as well as "the dire and deteriorating" humanitarian situation in Yemen.

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency quoted Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari on Tuesday as saying that Saudi Arabia, "on behalf of the USA and the Zionist regime (Israel), has a very important role in creating insecurity" in the Middle East.

The killing of Yemen's ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh by the country's Shiite rebels as their alliance crumbled has thrown the almost three-year civil war into unpredictable new chaos.
