Trump transition official in email: Russian Federation 'has just thrown the U.S. election'
06 December 2017, 07:57 | Myron Mathis
Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were spotted out for a run Saturday around noon after a long week
K.T. McFarland, President Trump's former deputy national security adviser, told lawmakers over the summer that she did not discuss or know anything about meetings between Sergey Kislyak, Moscow's former ambassador to the USA, and Michael Flynn, the fired White House aide who pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his conversations with a Russian diplomat.
Her answer - not an outright denial - was this: "I am not aware of any of the issues or events as described above".
Emails obtained by the Times show that Trump's team moved quickly to develop a strategy on how to reassure Russia after learning that Obama would expel 35 Russian diplomats in the weeks before he left office.
Trump earlier this year nominated McFarland, a former deputy national security adviser, to be the USA envoy to Singapore.
She was nominated to serve as the ambassador to Singapore in June.
K.T. McFarland, Trump's former deputy national security adviser, give a thumbs up to members of the media as she arrives at Trump Tower in New York, Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.
A senior member of President Donald Trump's transition team said in email to a colleague on December 29, 2016, shortly after the Obama administration had imposed new sanctions on Russian Federation, that the transition team should try to reassure the country that had just "thrown" the election to Trump.
Outlets also identified Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner as the "very senior transition official" referenced in the documents who reportedly pushed Flynn to persuade the Russian government to vote against a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements.
Booker also mentioned Flynn's 2015 trip to Moscow, where he attended a dinner hosted by a Kremlin-backed news network and was seated at the head table next to President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation.
One of those questions, from New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker, was this: "Did you ever discuss any of Gen. Flynn's contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak directly with Gen. Flynn?" He pleaded guilty on Friday to lying to F.B.I. agents about his discussions with Mr. Kislyak about the sanctions.
Court documents state that Flynn discussed what he should tell Mr Kislyak with another transition official beforehand and briefed that person afterward.
Ms McFarland worked so closely with Flynn on the transition team that her colleagues sometimes referred to her as his "brain".
