President Vladimir Putin kept Russians waiting as he dodged an opportunity to announce his long-awaited bid for another six-year term.

After first taking power in 2000, Putin has served three terms as president, with a four-year break when he served as prime minister in 2008-2012.

The president chose to make the long-expected announcement at the GAZ automobile factory in Nizhny Novgorod, where he found an enthusiastic audience in the workers. I want to say that at present, we have trust only in our president who returned the people of Crimea to their motherland, who restores Russian Federation and who loves his people.

Russia's elections on March 18 are timed to coincide with the anniversary of Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine-a move that boosted Putin's popularity at home.

The challenge for Putin is not other candidates - nobody looks capable of unseating him.

Instead, his toughest task will be to mobilise an electorate showing signs of apathy to ensure a high turnout which in the tightly-controlled limits of the Russian political system is seen as conferring legitimacy.

Putin has spent a year dodging the question about whether he would run.

"Yes, I will run for the president of the Russian Federation", Putin said, as quoted by TAS agency. Putin was forced to resign for which his subordinate Dmitry Medvedev was appointed as the President of Russian Federation. That decision will trigger a round of intrigue over the succession, as whoever holds the prime minister's post is often viewed as the president's heir apparent. Sobchak said on Wednesday that Putin would probably win "as always", but that she still planned to run to represent people who wanted change.

Veterans of past campaigns _ Communist chief Gennady Zyuganov, ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky and liberal leader Grigory Yavlinsky _ all have declared their intention to run.
