Lubaina Himid Wins Prestigious Turner Prize Age 63

The jury made its decision on the back of Himid's trio of exhibitions in Oxford, Bristol and Nottingham, which showcased her paintings, prints and installations. Also speaking to the Guardian, Himid stated that she was happy to have won the award, and honored the many other black women who were never able to win, even after they were shortlisted. The shortlisted artists for 2017 were: Hurvin Anderson, Andrea Büttner, Lubaina Himid and Rosalind Nashashibi.

The jury wanted to put spotlight on a series of authors in mature stage of ir careers that, although y connect with public, y have been marginalized by cultural elites because of ir multiculturalism and, often, as women, as President has emphasized and Director of Tate Britain, Alex Farquharson. They admire her expansive and exuberant approach to painting which combines satire and a sense of theatre.

Judges praised the Zanzibar-born artist for the "seriousness of themes she addressed", paying tribute to the "current vitality of Lubaina's work as well as the current relevance" of it in three decades past.

The £25,000 prize was presented by DJ, producer and artist Goldie during a live broadcast on the BBC. The panel added that they "acknowledged her role as an influential curator and educator who continues to speak urgently to the moment". Himid's work challenges the stereotypical depictions of black figures in art history, foregrounding the contribution of the African diaspora to Western culture. Her paintings, prints, drawings, and installations are now in the collections of Tate, the Whitworth Art Gallery, and the Leeds City Museum, among other institutions.

The Turner Prize, organized by Tate Gallery, is considered the most high-profile prize in the British art world and one of the most prestigious awards in the visual art world. Previously it had been used as a platform to promote the work of younger artists.

The members of the Turner Prize 2017 jury were Dan Fox, writer and co-editor of Frieze; Martin Herbert, art critic; Mason Leaver-Yap, Walker Art Center's Bentson Scholar of Moving Image and associate curator at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin; and Emily Pethick, the director of Showroom, London. The exhibition has proved one of the most popular in Turner Prize history, attracting 90,000 visitors to date.

"I think there is no longer an overwhelming focus on youth as equating to what's innovative in contemporary art".
