Vandals again attack Lionel Messi statue in Argentina

The bronze statue of the Argentine forward was cut off at the ankles and the rest of the statue was found on its side next to the pedestal.

Local police are investigating the incident and are on the lookout for the perpetrators.

The figure was put up in an attempt to help convince the five-time Ballon d'Or victor to end his brief national team retirement in the summer of 2016 following Argentina's defeat to Chile in the Copa America Centenario final - their third loss in a major final in as many years.

They moved early, as Messi would have been able to speak to City in the new year if he had not signed a new deal.

In January, the monument was cut in half from the waist up before being repaired and re-erected by the city government days later. That marked the fourth time a Messi-led Argentina squad lost in the final of a major worldwide tournament, including the 2007 and 2015 Copa America and the 2014 World Cup, and he had come under some criticism for not achieving better results.

Messi recently saved Argentina's 2018 World Cup place when he scored a hat-trick against Ecuador in October.

Messi will spend the remainder of his peak years at FC Barcelona after renewing his contract in November, but that only came after City made one last effort to prise him from Camp Nou.

It's certainly not the only Messi statue, so the vandals have more work to do.
