Shohei Ohtani Informs Yankees That He Is Not Signing With Them

MLB ratifies new posting agreement; Shohei Ohtani posted effective today

Ohtani rumors start to swirl as MLB approves Japan deal

The Yankees had been considered the favorite to sign Ohtani for weeks now because they have as much worldwide bonus money available as any team ($3.5M), also because they have a great young roster loaded with talent.

According to Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan, the Giants and Mariners are among the finalists.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the NY media that his team also wouldn't be among the teams represented in Los Angeles, where the pitcher/hitter will be getting together with his finalists later this week.

Major League Baseball teams have until December 22 at 11:59 p.m. ET to reach a deal to sign Ohtani to a contract. Teams interested in signing him will only be limited to amount of money in their global bonus pools. The Rangers are estimated to have $3.53 million to offer, if interested.

A person familiar with the decision says Major League Baseball owners have approved a new posting agreement with their Japanese counterparts in a move that allows bidding to start for coveted pitcher and outfielder Shohei Ohtani. The Oakland Athletics are not one of those teams, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

But he also wants to play either the outfield or be a designated hitter. Over the course of his five seasons as a professional in Japan, he went 42-15 with a 2.52 ERA, averaging 10.3 K/9 IP. He also hit.283 with 48 home runs and 166 RBIs in 403 games.
