Mumbai disappointed as clouds take the shine out of 'supermoon'

December's Full Moon is traditionally known as the "cold moon".

A supermoon is a new or full moon that appears bigger to the human eye because it is the closest to the Earth during its orbit.

According to NASA - that combination made the moon appear about 14 percent larger than it normally does.

Arvind Paranjpye, director of Nehru Planetarium said, "The moon was supposed to start rising at 6.58 pm yesterday, but was covered in passing clouds so we couldn't see much". The next two will occur on Jan. 1, 2018, and Jan. 31; since the supermoon on Jan. 31 will be the second full moon in January, it's dubbed a Blue Moon, and will occur during a total lunar eclipse.

Past year the moon made its closest approach to the Earth since 1948, and it won't be this close again until November 25, 2034.

In this instance, the moon orbited a cool 357,987 kilometres close to Earth, which was enough for it to be classified as a supermoon.

The supermoon reached its peak at 4 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, when it was a little over 222,000 miles away from the earth.

Stargazers, astronomers and curious sky watchers got a chance to witness the first and only supermoon of this year Sunday night.
