195 job offers on first day of placement season at IIT-M

There were 71 offers in the slot during last year's placements.

Earlier Economic Times had reported that Microsoft would be visiting IIT campuses this year for recruitment and may offer close to Rs. 1.39 crore package for jobs at its Redmond headquarters. Given the fact that many students had withdrawn the job offers made in 2015, the institute did not allot any preferential slots to start-up firms.

However, as per The Indian Express, the IIT Bombay and Madras have refused to disclose details.

In the second slot which started at 4 pm, 14 companies including Airbus Group India, Flipkart, Oracle, Samsung R&D, and Qualcomm participated.


At IIT Bombay, PPOs (pre-placement offers), or job proposals given to candidates who at companies did internship, in IT segment outnumbered fiscal services PPOs in 2017. After the first round the placements will recommence in January and go on till May, 2018. "Scene is much better compared to previous year", she said. "There was 15 per cent rise in offers on the first day compared to 2016 when 160 offers were received on the first day of placement", said an official at IIT Madras.

For past few years, domestic firms have been offering pay packages between ₹20 and ₹35 lakh.

Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, IBM, Microsoft, BCG, Cairn, McKinsey Knowledge Centre & Tata Steel gave the highest number of domestic offers during Day 1 of IIT Bombay placements while the maximum global offers were made by NEC Japan, Microsoft, Optiver, Rubrik & Uber. Due to the special effort put in by the placement team, the number of companies interested in post-graduate and PhD scholars has witnessed an increase. As many as 18 students accepted the government offer past year. Also, attractive packages and perks are being offered to students of production and industrial engineering, master of computer applications, applied mathematics, geophysical technology, applied geology and geological technology.
