Tiger Woods makes strong start in return

Tiger Woods reacts on the fourth hole at the Hero World Challenge golf tournament at Albany Golf Club in Nassau Bahamas Thursday Nov. 30 2017

It's been an exciting day thus far at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, and Tiger Woods has been right in the middle of it.

Tiger Woods is back and so is the fist pump.

Still he made the turn at 1-under and quickly added a bounce-back birdie at 10, followed by two more on 13 and 14 to pull within a couple of shots of the lead.

He also played the five par-5 holes in 1 over par, making two bogeys (one after having to take an unplayable lie at the 15th hole) - an obvious area where he will need to improve. Woods pulled within two with a bounceback birdie on No. 10.

He finished with three straight pars, placing him three shots behind leader Tommy Fleetwood of England.

Woods said: "I thought I did great".

And a good bit of Wood's competitiveness was apparent - a fist pump after a long par-saving putt at the fourth, an expletive dropped after a poor chip shot at the ninth, a slammed club after an errant approach to the 12th. It's different when you have to tee up in a tournament. I had a lot of adrenaline going there, I was hitting the ball a little bit longer than I normally do and I had to dial it back a little bit.

"Those are the internal struggles I haven't been through in a while".

Former world number one Woods is now ranked 1,199th and is a 40/1 outsider in the 18-man field, with world ranking points on offer as he looks to kick-start his flagging career.
