New Oregon State head football coach Jonathan Smith
A person with direct knowledge of the decision says Oregon State has hired Washington co-offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith to be its new head coach. "If there's a fit somewhere - coach or consult - yeah, that'd be awesome". While the Beavers' opening may not be at the top of most national lists regarding intrigue, Oregon State seemingly had a hire in place only to have the rug pulled out and that provided some interest on a grand scale.
After graduating, Smith became a graduate assistant at his alma mater before moving to Idaho, where he was the quarterbacks coach for six seasons.
Jonathan Smith is returning to where he started. "But it's flattering. Obviously I've got great memories there and whatnot". He was the quarterback of the 2000 team that went 11-1 - losing only at Washington 33-30 - and routed Notre Dame 41-9 in the 2001 Fiesta Bowl. "I played for some of the best coaches I have ever been around and learned numerous qualities I have utilized in my coaching career". "He brings to Oregon State football an impressive plan to build our program". Cory Hall served as the interim coach this year after Gary Andersen was sacked in October.
