Dlawless 163-carat diamond fetches $49.4 million in Geneva auction

D, according to gemologists, is the highest colour grade given to diamonds and indicates that the precious stone is absolutely colourless and therefore rare. The item is expected to fetch at least $30m (£23m) at auction. Ten diamond-cutting specialists worked on the rough in NY after it was analysed in Antwerp.

The diamond, the centrepiece of an asymmetric gem-studded necklace designed by Fawaz Gruosi, founder of Geneva jeweller De Grisogono, exceeded the auction house's expectation of US$25 million. The necklace is made of 18 diamonds on one side and two rows of pear-shaped emeralds on the other.

"Le Grand Mazarin", a 19 carats pink diamond, belonged to the French crown for more than 200 years and was part of its crown jewels.

This stone discovered past year in Angola is so pure and so large that even Christie's jewellery director David Warren can't contain his enthusiasm.

Unsurprisingly it comes with a hefty price tag.

The pink stone, originally dug out of the ancient mines of Golconda in south-central India, sparkled on the crowns of Louis XV and Louis XVI, who was guillotined during the French Revolution. It was the final lot of the auction and sold for $14,463,393.
